What Makes Laas Geel Extraordinary?
Meaning "Water Source for Camels" in Somali, Laas Geel is a rock shelter complex located outside Hargeisa. Discovered internationally in 2002 by a French archaeological team led by Xavier Gutherz, the site features remarkably vivid polychrome paintings that have remained preserved for over 5,000 years under granite overhangs.
The rock art depicts ceremonial cows adorned with decorative robes and neck hangings, accompanied by human figures raising their hands in adoration. Other shelters feature wild dogs, giraffes, antelopes, and intricate tribal symbols. The pigments—rich reds, bright yellows, whites, and dark blacks—retain astonishing brilliance due to the dry desert atmosphere and granite shelter geometry.
