In contrast to Somalia, which is synonymous with war, anarchy, and acts of piracy on the high seas, Somaliland represents a very different scenario. The country declared independence from the rest of the war-torn nation in 1991, and has prospered, avoiding the violence that engulfs its neighbors to the south.
I can assure you that the intrepid outsider who comes here will find a delightful country that has enduring ties to its colonial past as British Somaliland, and will feel thoroughly rewarded after exploring the fascinating historical sites and ruins of the nation.
There are many things to see and do here, from some of the most significant Neolithic rock art caves on the African continent. These include Laas Geel and Dhagah Kure, to explore Somaliland’s capital city of Hargeisa, the ruins of Ferusa, and admiring the once splendid architecture of Berbera’s ancient port.

Amanda,
11 November, 2024I travelled with Sahan Tourism as a solo woman for a two-day tour of Somaliland. From the start, the company made me feel welcome and at ease, with attentiveness to any questions I had. They looked after me very well and I felt safe and secure for all of my stay.
I really enjoyed my time in Somaliland and found the people to be very friendly and hospitable. I visited Hargeisa and Berbera but the highlight was seeing the prehistoric rock art at Laas Geel. Amazing to finally get to see this.
I found Sahan Tourism to be good value for money and my guide was informative, giving me some fascinating insights into Somaliland and its culture.
I can recommend Sahan Tourism for a great stay in Somaliland.
